No meds needed. Pop a dose of these thoughts for a guaranteed smoother slumber. Sleep like a child !
We’ve all been told to drink warm milk and tune out technology before bed to ensure a good night’s sleep, but researchers have now proven that simply being grateful can be enough to ensure solid slumber.
A study published in Applied Psychology: Health and Well Being sought to help college students sleep better by observing the sleep and pre-sleep “worry and arousal” of 41 participants. Researchers found that those who focused on feeling grateful were less worried and anxious before bed and their overall sleep quality was better compared to previous nights.
But the benefits of gratitude don’t stop there.
A separate study published in Applied Psychology: Health and Well Being found that reflecting on things for which we’re grateful “can be used to enhance long-term well-being.”
One group completed a four-week program during which they focused on things for which they were grateful. Another group participated in a program focusing on memorable events instead. After the study, those in the gratitude program reported feeling more satisfied with life and had higher levels of self-esteem.
It’s easy to get bogged down by negativity when we’re busy or stressed out, but the power of gratitude can get you back on the path to positive. When you’re less anxious, you’ll naturally fall asleep faster and toss and turn less throughout the night.
So after you switch off the TV or put down your book for the night, focus on the things in your life for which you’re grateful. In the morning, you’ll be grateful you did!
